What's The Buzz? Tell Me What's Happenin'!

Okay, enough with the rock opera stuff and let's get to hockey. In this column, we will discuss what Pens fans have been buzzing about lately on Twitter, Facebook and even dinner table conversation. (imagine that!)

Sidney Crosby.

The first and most obvious subject, the Captain. From a broken neck to his mystery press conference to his recent comments about not being symptom free yet; a lot has been swirling around about him and quite frankly, fans are frustrated. Can ya blame them?

I like to think that most Pens fans and general hockey fans want the best for Crosby. He, along with other NHL stars, make the game appealing to fans of all ages and undoubtedly to those who pay good money on tickets.

But there come a time where we as fans must place our fan card on the shelf and look at the situation differently, without our black and vegas gold glasses. Crosby not only has to consider his career but his life beyond hockey.  But until Crosby is 100%, fans will have to deal with conflicting media reports and more vague updates.

Staal and Despres.

As if we are lucky on the injury front, fans received refreshing news that forward Jordan Staal and defenseman Simon Despres are close to returning to the lineup. Staal said, "Not far, I don’t think. It’s feeling really good. It’s just a matter of time."

Evgeni Malkin.

Enough said.

Tyler Kennedy.

The Ol' boy is the latest player that has been added to the shelf pending his reevaluation today. Even with an injury, TK has managed to cause quite the stir amongst fans. The 25 year old forward, who has a cap hit of 2 million since receiving a new deal this past off season, has managed only 6 goals and 22 points so far. A lot want Kennedy on the platter for the deadline.

Paul Martin.
Speaking of trade deadline, let's put Paul Martin out here, oh wait....errr...NTC. Unless GM Shero has the freak powers of that chick in Wolverine where he places his hand on Martin's shoulder and tells him to walk back to New Jersey and never turn around,  Paul Mart is here to stay BUT stranger things have happened.

Eric Tangradi.

In a sense, you have to feel bad for the guy, right? I mean people talked Tango up to be this awesome big body forward that would put Ryan Malone to shame. With a few good shifts here and there, Tangradi really hasn't lived up to all of the expectations. This brings up the question, is Tangradi still in the plan? .....who honestly know what will happen, but we do know one thing that does happen to him...

PK Subban.

Without a doubt Subban is "dangerously tripping" his way up to the top of the jagoff list. The guy is a good player with a craptastic attitude. He's shown he has little to no regard for the safety of his fellow NHLers and as Josh Yohe reported, "I can assure you that Subban is the NHL's most unpopular player in the Penguins' locker room. They don't like the guy, as you just saw."

Habs Fans.

Boooooooooooooooooooooo! "Guys, we just won the game.." "Oh?" ... Booooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Brent Johnson.

Today we'll end the buzz with Brent Johnson. Yes Johnny has been a little iffy lately but we've got faith in BeeJ. So BeeJ our message to you is...

LETS GO PENS!

Preseason Reflection: A Stocked Cupboard

I have been battling a nasty flu bug and have been bed ridden for most of a week now (TMI?). Either way, that has given me ample time to reflect on a fairly exciting pre-season for the Pens. I personally have to say this if anything about our 5-1 record this go around: The cupboard is stocked for a few years and the future looks bright for the black and gold.

As I am a " live in the moment" type person, I cannot help but look ahead at what this training camp offered us as not only a glimpse of what to come, but that the Pens draft picks of today and yesterday are buying into the Pens system. Sid is officially on the IR now and essentially in limbo no matter what is said or written from this point on. It's not until he steps on the ice for his first game this year that we'll all know for sure.

___________________________

Naturally I am going to provide a list of disappointments first, but the list is a short one.

James Neal looked, well, average. Ultimately not much different than he did for a 1/4 of last year, which could go either way in my opinion. In my opinion however, not much is expected so what he does produce would be a bonus at best. But there are some who have the bulls-eye squarely pointed at 18's back and that is absolutely warranted. He needs to get that deer in the headlights look off his face and hit the back of the net...or at the very least go near it. We'll see how he does when on a consistent line with Sid or Geno.

Eric Tangradi had another much heralded shot, and pretty much did what he does best. Which is, not much. I really have trouble seeing why he is so highly regarded outside of his size and bull-in-a-china-shop attitude towards the opposition. But only if the new 25 even knew what to do out on his shift he might have stayed around a little longer, but I think he played himself down to WB/S. And sad as it is to say, that's where he belongs at the moment. You have to wo
nder how many chances he's going to get with Shero and Bylsma.

___________________________

Now conversely, there are too many bright spots and many people who deserve to be mentioned in my "praises" category. But let's just look at the obvious.

Gino shined, Johnny was solid, Flower looks ready, and the D hasn't missed a step. Staal, Kunitz, TK and others looked as hungry as ever and looked what appeared to be mid-season-esq form. Even in a lack luster defeat vs. the Red Wings, they looked hungry.

Orpik's status is still questionable. With him not being in the pre-season opened the door for perhaps the biggest moment of the whole camp and pre-season. Enter, Joe Morrow. This kid looked a 10 year vet. He's gonna claim the man-among-boys title when he continues his stellar play in the juniors. Overall the Pens defence shows no glaring holes for at least the next 7 years and if every one of them had Morrow's game, I will sleep soundly for awhile. Can't wait to see if he makes it next year. What does it say about you when the perhaps the most touted defender (Despres) was sent down a full week and a half before you? It says, potential.

Long story short, we are just over 72 hours from the start of our 2011-2012 and I have to say I'm kinda wishing it was tomorrow rather than Thursday. But I'm still upset at the schedule makers that has an Eastern Conference powerhouse opening on the road (3 straight home openers to boot) against 3 teams that have no bearing or rivalry implications vs. the Pens at all. Yet all other Atlantic Division or Eastern teams open up against a rival or division foe. (With the exception of the teams who are opening up overseas, if you need them).

But this way we have time to rally the troops and try to take at least 4 of 6 points on this trip to start well and send an early message. That will make Sid's absence noticeably smaller and make everyone accountable as they should be. No passengers this time around and I don't expect there will be many. Oh, and by the way, was it just me or did anyone notice that Talbot even played here..... ;)

WBS PensU Player Profile: Eric Tangradi

Throughout the off-season, we here at Pens Universe are going to provide you with player profiles that will summarize our opinions on the strengths and weaknesses of each player as well as highlighting their performance this past season, and we'll also include an outlook for the 2010-2011.

ERIC TANGRADI

2009-10 Stats

Salary: $875,000
Points: 39
Goals: 17
Assists: 22
(+/-): -1
PIM: 31

Strengths:
Solid neutral zone player and large presence in front of the crease allowing him quality scoring chances.

Weakness:
Eric needs to leave the crease and use his slap shot more and develop his defensive zone skills to create more scoring opportunities.

09-10 Assessment

There was a lot of talk around the acquisition of the 6’4” 221 pounder coming to the organization to flank Crosby or Malkin. He played well for Wilkes-Barre this year with 65 games under his belt. During the season he tallied 17 goals, 22 assists for a total of 39 points and 31 penalty minutes. Eric was called up for one game in Pittsburgh where he had more than 14.5 minutes of ice time and 3 shots on goal.

Awards:
Best Trivia host on twitter

10-11 Outlook:
Eric will continue to develop his stills at the AHL level becoming a team leader. Unfortunately for us WBS fans, as his play continues to improve we can expect to see more call ups and eventually a permanent spot in Pittsburgh. In his media appearance the other day, Ray Shero mentioned Eric's name first in the line of "prospects" who will be fighting for a roster spot in the bigs. While we all know Ray would like to give Eric one more full season in WBS, if "Tank" can prove his worth, he would be a perfect financial alternative to the veteran winger Shero seeks to fill the gap currently.

Worth his Salt?

Yes, for both his play on the ice and "Tangradi Trivia". Coach Bylsma gave him 14+ minutes of ice time and FSN Pittsburgh even gave him his own highlight reel at the end of his first game with Pittsburgh. Enough said.

With the Pens in 10-11?

Yes. Signed through the 2010-11 season. Look for extension talks mid-season.

The Eric Tangradi Trivia Shirt...

For those fans of PENS UNIVERSE who are not as in tuned with social media and consequently unfamiliar with our activity on Twitter, this is for you. Recently we've teamed up with WBS Penguin LW Eric Tangradi to produce t-shirts on his behalf for his critically acclaimed Tangradi Trivia Time on Twitter. Each Wednesday at 10pm Eric spends some time interacting with his most loyal followers/fans and asks thoughtful, yet entertaining questions. Whoever answers the question correctly and the fastest gets acknowledged publicly by Eric on his twitter page.

Since the birth of the t-shirt idea, Eric has agreed not only to give a few away as a token of his appreciation, but also put the shirts up for sale in our Zazzle online store. Furthermore he's agreed to donate all the proceeds to our current partnership with the Cooke Foundation of Hope. The entire project is a non-profit effort to help continue to raise funds for benefit of the Cooke Family.

We want to publicly thank Eric for his noble participation and ask our fans of PENS UNIVERSE to join Eric on Twitter on Wednesday nights (trust me, its fun) and please consider purchasing a t-shirt to help.

Pens Universe Interviews Eric Tangradi

The Pittsburgh Penguins top prospect [Eric Tangradi] was gracious enough to answer some questions for me to share with Pens Universe. For those who don't know he came over in the Kunitz/Whitney trade we made with the Ducks before the trade deadline last year and is currently playing for our AHL affiliate, the [Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins]

PU: Who was your hockey idol growing up? Did he influence your style of play, if so why? And if not, what player or players do you most likely compare your style to?

ET: When I was growing up I was a huge Keith Primeau fan. He was a Flyer and I really got an opportunity to learn and study his game which I believe helped me tremendously. We both carry a big frame and I tried to adapt his style of play in my minor hockey days.

PU: Everybody’s heard about the Sidney Crosby story of shooting pucks into the dryer; growing up did you have any "unique ways" of practicing?

ET: No, I didn't really do anything like that. I just thank my parents for some good genes.

PU: It’s almost been about 5 months since your wrist injury, how is the wrist holding up for you? Any problems?

ET: I'm doing well now after a long summer I finally feel like I'm back to 100%. No problems with mobility, the only setback is that I don't have any feeling in my thumb, but I'm not too worried about it.

PU: How was your experience at Pens training camp? As a “new guy” were you subjected to any practical jokes or hazing?

ET: A few jokes here and there but the guys are great in Pittsburgh and training camp was a great experience for me.

PU: Though it was only pre-season, how was it like being alongside Sid and Geno?

ET: It was unbelievable. I mean I had an opportunity to play with 2 of the best players in the world which was a ton of fun. I remember being nervous in the beginning but after that it was just hockey.

PU: What has the transition been like coming from OHL to the AHL? Differences? Similarities?

ET: The biggest difference is that I'm playing against men now instead of teenagers in junior. Previously I could get by just using my size but now its important for me to use all my tools every shift to be effective. The similarities would have to be the guys. Every day at the rink is a always a great time and that has helped me with the transition.

PU: With a new season getting under way in Wilkes Barre, what are your expectations for yourself as well as your team?

ET: I'm just going to play my game every night and try to contribute as much as I can here. We have such a good balance of players and our expectations are high in Wilkes-Barre so it should make for a great season.

A big thanks to Mr. Eric Tangradi for allowing us to steal some of his time!!
