Dale Tallon's greatest gift to the Blackhawks

That's right, Roy Scheider, the man who knows how to kill Sharks

Seriously though, who wasn't waiting for the inevitable collapse....

After that performance by San Jose, exactly how much more important is Joe Thornton over Patrick Marleau...

Yep, San Jose....
.
Such a fitting song for ANOTHER San Jose playoff exit...
and Marleau on the way out

Kudos to the Chicago Blackhawks, even down 2-0 in Game 4 there was no quit in you.
I should be bitter that Hossa is in his 3rd consecutive Stanley Cup Finals, but I am not. Get it done Hossa, I am really sick of this story after 2 straight years.

I swear I can see this face.....
Screaming this....

The new Captain Clutch:

If you haven't seen it, here you go....

It's all about sacrifice and this guy knows something about that

Now just waiting for the latest internet video rage to spiral out of control...

1 Heatley, No Cups!

Turns out that a barbecue was planned in Chicago tonight...
Luckily, the seafood was already provided!

and for good measure and the last time I can use it this year....

I wish I had something positive to say about the Phlly/Montreal series....no, I don't wish that at all. The Flyers playing like they want something and the Habs are playing like drunk monkeys.

Can the Habs play the role of the cardiac midgets again?

We're going to see on Monday night

Auto Repair Clinic held in Philadelphia

Luckily the Philadelphia Flyers found it far more important hang around and repair what random fans decided to do during Game 1

Someone forgot to tell them that Game 3 was tonight

Personally, I was busy in the Versus chat held by @Brian_Metzer
I couldn't help but sympathize with a fellow who left chat when Montreal brought THAT GAME that they play.

In Montreal's defense, they came to play tonight..they looked interested and took their game to Philly.

Leighton got....

Pronger was embarrassed all night, including a wonderful "pass" for the Game Winner:

Montreal just controlled the entire game...Gagne scored late, but no one cared.
There was even some typical goonery, as expected, when Philly trails late in a game...

Insert any remark about anything Flyer related, the shenanigans that occurred under the 2 minute mark MAY have some impact on Game 4....certainly questionable.

What else is new?

Other notes:
I am aware of the Paul Ladewski article that had surfaced, and several folks have responded to it: PSAMP , ThePensblog , From The Point
From here, I don't feel a need to respond to this piece at all.  A baseball Writer (with a vote for the Hall of Fame) comments on the failure of the Pens for making the Playoffs and losing in the second round....never mind. Read those links, and move on.
It speaks VOLUMES that the article was pulled down.

It's not that Pittsburgh does not care about baseball, but it trails the Steelers and the Penguins in popularity...by a landslide. If a certain ownership group actually made an effort to field a winning team instead of collecting luxury money of the Red Sox and the Yankees and resting on the laurels known as merchandising sales, people would be incredibly surprised by the increase of fan support for the Pirates.

No Hockey = Slow News Day

The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed Derek Engelland

The IIHF has something to say about players who say "NO"
Here is MY take on that

Mad Props to @tangent_man over at From the Point.com

I guess we know how Cycling is getting those HUGE ratings now

If you have ever wondered if PED's and drugs have had a drastic impact on hockey, I suggest doing some homework and start with the name, John Kordic

On a Sad note....No Penguins Hockey until next September

Flyers and Canadiens tonight...but I could find myself playing Red Dead Redemption instead. If the Habs haven't shown up yet and they play a home game tonight....... #justsaying

Most likely though, I will be over at Versus.com if Brian Metzer is hosting the room again tonight...which it is looking like he will be, according to his tweets. You should make a point to stop in, you never know who will be there.

Yeah.....slow news day...enjoy!

Nothing in the tank and barely interested....

It's Conference Finals Day and the Penguins are not in either one---True
My Twitter feed was littered with Ronnie James Dio's  death---Not True

I have so little in the tank today.....The Ronnie James Dio stuff came too early and already knowing that he is battling stomach cancer, just makes it tough.  WDVE and Classic rock were a major part of my everyday life growing up in the 'Burgh.

The Re-enactment of the Boston Massacre and more..

March 5th, 1770- 240 years ago saw the Boston Massacre

May 14th,2010- The re-enactment was to be held in TD Garden

History is something to be watched when the probability of occurrence rests at 50%.
Team prejudices aside, watching the Philadelphia Flyers come back from a 0-3 Series deficit in a game that saw them trail the Boston Bruins 3-0, in the first period, was like watching a spectacular train wreck. Shock and Horror. Each Philly goal had some character with it, a weird bounce or off a Bruin player....but the game winning goal being scored on a power play which was delivered by Shawn Thornton's Too many Men on the Ice call in the 3rd period, it was quite the Fabulous Disaster:

Philly has Home Ice advantage as a 7 seed in the Eastern Conference Finals

Montreal as the 8 Seed called to say:

Enjoy some of the headlines around the internet today:

ESPN

TSN

NHL

Trust me folks, Philly winning last night HAD to occur for all of our sakes as hockey fans. Sure we have to hear about the Flyers for a while but that's far better than having to revisit old stories from this past season.

We all have our hopes about what the finals will work out to be, personally I would love an Original Six Matchup. We haven't seen one of those since the 1978-79 Season, when Scotty Bowman's Montreal Canadiens defeated Fred Shero's New York Rangers 4 Games to 1.

Say what you will about the NHL regular season, but the Playoffs never cease to have spectacular stories!

Stand Tall in Thunderdome - Habs vs Pens, Game 7

Let's get this started right today:

"It was a game, now it's a war
we're not ashamed to want some more
Stand Tall"

Game 7, it's here. Virtually no one called for this series to go 7 games, and yet here we are.
2 Teams enter, 1 team leaves:

This has been an unreal series so far, each team responding to adversity when it came calling. In Game 6, The Habs refused to accept a defeat and forced yet another team to another Game 7. Do they have it in them to win another one? The Pens have responded to each loss with a huge response game, will they respond again?

Projected Pens Lineup:
Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Talbot-Malkin-Guerin
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Rupp-Letestu-Adams

Orpik-Gonchar

Eaton-Letang

Leopold-Goligoski
  Fleury

KEYS TO GAME:
1. Every Pen needs to bring their "A" game
2. Every Pen needs to play 60 minutes, more if needed
3. The Pens need to make sure they have more goals than the Habs

It's just that simple, Dan Bylsma has the line change advantage to get who he wants on the ice against whoever Martin throws out. Spacek and Gill should be be ready to go

Notes:
-Outdoor screen is back
-The Pens are asking to "Bring the Noise"
-or Bring the Noise?
-Pens fans getting anxious
-Do the Habs have enough experience for Game 7
-Sami Salo played in Game 6 of the Chi/Van Series - *STICK TAP* and a bag of ice
-Another Goalie bites the dust in Philly
-Flyers have won 2 straight against Boston to make it a series again
-Chicago closes out Vancouver
-ThePensblog boys have more depth to why Game 7 shouldn't faze the fanbase

If you thought Lando could only destroy Death Stars and pitch Colt 45....

Pens Gameday 5/10/10 - The Battle for Montreal

Let's go with what works...

So here we are back in a familiar place ready to close out another opponent in the playoffs. Close out games haven't not our best friend as of late, but we do know how to close out a series on the road (cf. 2009 playoffs). So where better to play tonight then in Montreal Canada, right?

The Penguins played a great sixty minute game Saturday night, they limited the Habs time and space and held them to only one goal with 27 seconds left. It will take a complete effort tonight to end this series and avoid a game seven Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

A huge story tonight is whether the USS Hal Gill will play. As you know Gill was cut by a Chris Kunitz skate in previous game. Gill, quite frankly, has shut down Crosby this entire series. If he's not able to go it might in fact lead to Sid personally leading us to victory. The latest is he'll be a game time decision. A surprise player for the Canadians tonight is winger Sergei Kostitsyn. Sergei didn't even make the trip to Pittsburgh for game five.

For the Penguins there is one slight lineup change for tonight. Dupuis will play with Crosby and Guerin will play with Geno. These could be big changes for both lines. It gives Sid someone with the speed and toughness around the boards and it gives Geno a huge body in front of the net. I think this move will help tonight.

Here are your projected line ups for tonight's game.

Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Talbot-Malkin-Guerin
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Rupp-Letestu-Adams

Orpik-Gonchar

Eaton-Letang

Leopold-Goligoski

Fleury

My three keys for tonight's game.
  1.  Weather the Storm - They'll be coming harder then Katrina did to the gulf coast
  2. Protect Fleury - Keep the scoring chances down, especially the ones from behind the net
  3. Two-Headed Monster (871)- Lead us to victory guys!

Another one bites the dust and other crimes.....

Well, It needs to be said...

I'm San Jose, B***h!

Even though every team that gets eliminated this year has essentially seen some of the worst officiating in league history, Detroit now sleeps with the fishes. There will be no Episode III.

From what I've seen myself.....It's going to be a long off-season for bitter Red Wing fans, but teams have to play through it.

Other notes:

-Hal Gill to be evaluated today

-Unless Luongo steps up his game, its going to be 125 years before The Canucks get near a Stanley Cup:

-Oh that Don Cherry

-Cammalleri's remarks about Fleury

Excuses, whatever....

-And the Outstanding Performance Award for Drama goes to...Josh Gorges on the roughing call to Malkin (Say what you will about Crosby, Georges was WAY more "convincing")

-Boston can close out Philly tomorrow

It's Mother's Day, go tell her "Thank You" for everything.

and I leave you all with this......

Thank you, Undercover Brother....

LeBOOM! Gonch FTP and the Flower's in bloom!

From the drop of the puck you just knew the Penguins were going to win this game. Mellon Arena was thumpin', the towels were-a-wavin,' and you and I were on the edge of our couches. Our confidence quickly increase after Staal and his cohorts completely dominated the ice for the first two minutes. Though despite having control of the puck most of the period and being extremely physical, the period began to end with no sight of a goal on either side; the goalies were H.O.T. That was until Letang fired a laser from the point to beat Halak shortside to put the Pens up by one. Great shifts from just about everyone in the first, particularly the 3rd and 4th liners. Rupp looked like he switched jersey's with Geno the way he moved. It's so important to have your role players step up when the stars are struggling.

Montreal wasn't without their chances. They had a few good looks in the slot coming from some dishes behind the net; something the Habs do very well and something the Penguins unfortunately defend very poorly. And while I know I sound like I'm repeating myself from game 3, but if not for Fleury the game could have easily been 2-1 at the end of 1.

Fleury haters must recant.

Period two started off in the same fashion. Pens controlled much of the puck possession war and had some great chances. Geno was completely out of his mind on several plays. The way he held on to the puck made me think of how I control him in NH10. Circling the wagon with the puck until I can knock off a heavy wrister. Unfortunately he was held off the scoresheet the whole game. Nevertheless his contribution and impact hasn't gone unnoticed.

Ron Cooke must recant.

Quality scoring chances were held in check by the notable play from Halak. I think it was @jtkola who said Halak stops everything he sees. Well, he was right. The only two he didn't see were the ones from the point. Just as I said prior to the game needs to happen. Traffic in front of the net is key. Billy G is his name.

Alexi Ponikarovski - this years Petr Sykora?

Sid once again left his cape at home and decided to dress as Clark Kent tonight appearing to have lost his super powers. He was practically non-existent and simply didn't have much to offer the Pens in their win tonight. Not only were his numbers low, but he even failed to bury an empty net as the final seconds ticked away. Something's not right, we just don't know what. Though credit Gill and Georges for their defense. Man-to-man isn't a popular strategy in hockey, but it works on Sid. Then again, as long as the Pens win it doesn't ultimately matter how Sid plays. Betcha he feels the same way.

courtesy of ESPN.com

Mark Letestu (aka Lester) made an even bigger name for himself with perhaps his best NHL game. From winning scrums along the boards, to providing much needed energy off the bench, to getting an assist on the Gonchar game winner...he was a beast. He was even real close to burying a shot from point blank, but Halak had other plans. Had he scored he'd likely have had his name in one of the star columns.

In the end it was just the tenaciousness and willingness of the Pens to hang on. Cammalleri poked the puck in the net past Fleury with just over 30 seconds left in the game to scare the hell out of all Pens fans for about 3 minutes. But the Pens held their post (unlike lasts) and took a 3-2 series lead.

Monday the boys head to Montreal to try to clinch a ECF trip. Its going to be a real tough game. No word on whether Hal Gill will play. He sustained a "lower body" injury late in the game. I can tell you this, the Habs faced three "elimination" games last series and they know what it takes to win big games like this. The Pens must be ready. They must be focused. They need to come for the full 60. SUP87MAN cannot dilly-dally, he needs to give it his all out there against his Dad's former team. He needs to come strong. Maybe a few nights in the room with Craig Adams will do him some good.

Saturday Morning Drudgery- UPDATED

Wow, new meds for the allergies meant that I actually slept and breathed at the same time for once this week. See also:

It's gameday. And while this isn't the pregame it will sum up what I could not stay up to watch last night:

Buccigross: If you don't shed a tear, you are NOT human

-The Pens after yesterday's practice

-Apparently Jonathan Toews went on a "killing spree" last night

-The Flyers won the lottery last night

-Brian Metzer was just saying...

-Darren Dreger's info on the Coyotes sale

I would love to see this again:

Sorry Phoenix, you should have never had the team, in my opinion.

Now can we get some love for this:

Quebec, you are already working on your own deal...I applaud you

-The Montreal Canadiens will have a new locker room attendant tonight:

Now for the real deal:

Tonight's Game 5 is huge, GAMEFACE!

Pens find a way, to lose...

The lesson I learned from this loss is not to put my 2 year old down between periods. Rather, its just best to let her stay up for the whole game. Why? Because after 2 periods we were up 2-1. Then I read Ava a book, did nigh-nigh prayer, and come back to the game down a goal. Sorry honey, daddy's got a game on.

In any event, post game thoughts are never fun when you lose. And when you lose the way we did tonight its even worse. I'd rather do a photoshop and completely belittle the entire country, but I'll be fair tonight. The Canadiens played real well in the third period to come back and win the game. They did what I said they wanted to do in the third instead of the first. Come out, get a lead, and hang on for dear life. They did just that after scoring the two goal early in the 3rd. Credit them for their efforts. Though discredit the Penguins for simply not being ready in the third. They were stunned by Lapierre's wrap around, then were out of position on their third goal. After that frustration set in. Sid took his cape off and showed he is in fact mortal by making a few bad passes. Geno likewise failed to capitalize on a breakaway with 3 minutes remaining.

While I like to give credit where credit is due, and I know I've said this before, but the Habs didn't win this game, the Pens lost it. They let it slip out of their hands. All they needed to do was match the Habs intensity for 20 more minutes and they didn't. Now they're tied in the series instead of being up 3-1. Its a sober reminder that you have to come out ready every single game and not let up for one minute in the playoffs. The Habs are hungry, they just took down the President trophy winners and now they want to take down the current Cup holders on their way to the EFC. Will the Pens stop them, or will Montreal celebrate another series victory? The drama continues Saturday.

DOMINATION

I don't think I saw the Penguins play a better period in these playoffs. Perhaps game 3 was the closest. Either way, while watching the first 20 minutes I was reminded of memories of yesteryear with the type of goals and the amount of energy displayed by the players. After going down 1 goal real quick they came back and exploited the defense and got two quick ones of their own. Talbot shhhhh'd the crowd with a weak backhander through Halak's legs. Then Kunitz got rewarded for crashing the net.

The other significant factor was the forecheck and the puck management. There wasn't a time when you didn't see two Penguins putting pressure on Montreal's defense and creating scrum after scrum along the boards. Likewise there was a period of time where the Pens kept the puck in the Habs zone for, I would say, more than 2 full minutes.

At this point you were thinking to yourself, this game could get out of hand quickly, and in our favor. But oddly it didn't. Letang missed a wide open net when he couldn't corale the puck onto his stick. Still, the Pens were leading and all seemed well.

STILL WATERS

Despite what you see on the score sheet (11-3 SOG in favor of the Pens), the period wasn't much to talk about. The level of intensity seemed to die down a bit but the momentum still favored the Pens. There was no scoring and only one penalty, which doesn't make for an exciting period for anyone.

COLLAPSE CITY

As I said in the beginning, I missed the first 3 minutes since I had to put my kid asleep, so I missed it. Thankfully (or unthankfully rather) I caught the replay of both goals. Wrap around goals are few and far between in the playoffs, but Fleury wasn't on tonight, that was clear. The second goal was a matter of circumstance, what can you do. Though I'm convinced any other night Fleury would have had that.

The Pens did provide a period ending onslaught of their own, only they came up short. Geno should have absolutely scored on that breakaway. Had he did, the game was ours. But Halak held his own. Though Geno didn't appear well, especially after he crashed into the boards with Subban in the first. Looked like he twisted his knee a bit. Here's to hoping for the best. Also Sid had a chance at the end that Halak stopped. I didn't get a good glimpse at it but it appeared he had an open net.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This Game 5 is going to be huge. The Pens MUST make this a statement game like game 1. They need to win on home ice and not run the risk of possibly going back to Montreal down 3-2. The last thing they need is to head back to Montreal on the brink of elimination. I assert this will not be the case.

PENS GAMEDAY 5/06/2010 - Game 4 - Habs

Yesterday was one of the most exciting days for us Penguin fans. Why? Jordan Staal returned to the ice for an optional practice. It was less than a week ago we all got word of an injury to Staalsy. The following day RDS.ca caused the biggest uproar I've seen on twitter since the Tiger incident by reporting Staal having "season ending" surgery. Fortunately it was inaccurate. Though we at PensU had to do a little digging on our own and found out Staal was only going to be out for 7-10 days, maybe sooner. Well, that's just what happened. Though as of now the reports show Staal will be a game time decision.

The other two missing Penguins unlikely to play tonight are Bill Guerin (likely to return on Saturday) and Mike Rupp, who is questionable due to undisclosed reasons.

Undisclosed reasons make us all ponder and speculate. We're not going to do that here. Though Geurin was just quoted at 2:50pm stating the following:

"On playing Game 5 Saturday night: That’s my goal. I won’t say yes or no but that is my goal to play Game 5. Right now that is what I am shooting for. I felt good on the ice today and I had a lot of energy. There were a lot of good jokes in the locker room today so I am feeling better."

GAME THOUGHTS

When we speak of a game 4 situation like this we're speaking of perhaps the most pivotal game of this series. We all know why, the Pens have a chance to either take a two game lead and go up 3-1, or they can let the Habs back into the series and completely alter the momentum. Tonight will be no different in the eyes of head coach Jacques Martin. He'll want to establish the same amount of energy they came out with in game 3. As stated in our thoughts on that game, if not for the heroics of Fleury the game would have gotten out of hand pretty quickly. Well that's just what Martin wants, to establish an early lead and hang on for dear life. He's reported to be doing a little line shuffling of his own to create some disruption for the Pens. Going down 3 game to 1 isn't on the Canadiens agenda, but unless they can contain the onslaught of SUP87MAN and Geno they don't stand a chance.
Thus far the Pens are undefeated on the road with a 4-0 record and are oddly one game under .500 at home (2-3). They seem to thrive when paying in the opponents arena, which is certainly not the norm. Though if you remember correctly they won every series last year in the post season on the road. Therefore proving the "Crosby Sucks" methodology as a failure.

KEYS TO THE GAME:
  • WEATHER THE STORM: Its inevitable that the energy level of the Habs was too much for the Pens. Chances are they're going to come out gunz-a-blazin' and try to get out on an early lead. The Pens need to keep them in check by eliminating chances in the slot.
  • PATIENCE AND PUCK MANAGEMENT: In the second and third period we saw two major changes for the Penguins: 1) Getting back to their North and South style play, and 2) Patience and puck management. The latter is more critical against a team like Montreal who will look to exploit the defense and capitalize on turnovers.
  • FLOWER POWER: Clearly goalies and win and lose a game for their team. This was exactly what happened in game 3. If Fleury can maintain his stellar play, the Pens will always have a chance.

Pens Playoff Gameday 5/4/10 - All is Well

Its OK Pens fans, we only lost one game. Remember its a race to four!!!!

A few possible lineup changes tonight as Bill Guerrin sat out with a maintenance day and is a game-time decision. Mark Letestu centered the third line this morning in pregame skate. Your projected lines if Guerrin can not go.

Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Ponikarovsky-Malkin-Talbot
Cooke-Letestu-Kennedy
Rupp-Adams-Fedotenko

Fleury

One huge problem the Penguins need to fix is having player dominate behind Fleury and get quick passes out to the slot to one timers. The Canadiens first goal in game 2 is the perfect example of this goal. Its also the 2ND goal this series from that type of play and Ottawa scored a few goal last series and its quickly becoming an issue.

1:30 mark. How do you stop this play? Be physical with the player behind the net and take the guy out in front of the net.

My keys for tonight's game:

1.) Be physical for 60 minutes. Heavy fore check, heavy back check, and heavy checking period.

2.) Power play - I didn't type it for game 2 and we didn't score. We don't need 4-4, but 2-4 would be nice.

3.) Marc Andre Fleury - Steal a game and shut everyone in this city up for one night.
